Letting go of Perfection

Letting go of perfection

One of my goals this year is to let go of perfection. But what is perfection and how do you let go of it?

What does perfection mean to you? To me perfection is doing everything that I do right all the time. Speaking well on camera and note stuffing up my words, the content I’m providing is correct, useful and informative, making sure my hair is in the right place and looks good & my make up is flawless, my clothes matching. Everything has to be the way I want it to be. It’s my way or the highway. I think striving for perfection can border line with OCD because when things don’t go our way, look a certain way or go as we plan we start to judge ourselves, talking negative about ourselves  and our attitude changes. We start to believe we are not good enough or worthy enough. SO for me to let go of perfection I have come up with a 5 tips for myself to help me achieve my goal.

The dictionary defines perfection as “the action or process of improving something until it is faultless. I am now believe there is no such thing as faultless. And this is a constant reminder to myself.

Tips to letting go of perfection

  1. Acceptance

Letting go of perfection can be a mind game. We are always judging ourselves or feel like we are being judged by others. We need to accept there is no such thing as perfection and be ok with this. We need to remind ourselves every day that there is no such thing a being perfect and if any body things they are perfect well they are kidding themselves.

2. Be You

We live in a judgmental society. People are quick to judge. This comes from their own fear and feelings of imperfections. We should be happy with who we are and what we do, be real and authentic. If you look in the mirror and you like what you see, who you are as a person then continue to be you but if you don’t like what you see (not looks but attitude & personality) then change it. No one else can do this for you. Stay true to yourself and keep it real.

I love this quote by Dr Seuss “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t malter and those who malter don’t mind”

Live your life the way you want and those close to you will support and still love you no matter what.

3. Lessons

There are never failures only lessons. In order for us to grow we need to fail. If you don’t fail at anything in your life how will you learn? Strive to be 1% better then yesterday but not “perfection”

4. Just do it attitude

If we are one who is striving for things to be perfect if you wait for the ‘perfect time’ or the ‘perfect day’ or ‘perfect situation’ or the ‘perfect partner’ you may be waiting a while and may just very well miss out on any or all opportunities that come your way. We need to have the “Just do it” attitude. Go for what you want NOW because you never know what will happen tomorrow. Put it out there and see where the universe takes you. Life doesn’t happen to you. You make life happen. The only thing stopping you from getting what you want is you. Stop blaming others, stop being the victim. Take responsibility for your own life and Just do it!

5. It’s ok!

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy! We have negative thoughts, we have negative feelings and we often self sabotage because somewhere deep inside our sub conscious we have told ourselves we are not worthy, we are not good enough, we don’t deserve to be successful, we are not allowed to be skinny, or it’s wrong to earn lots of money. And we start to believe these things and act in ways to avoid achieving them. I know myself I have done this. And it’s not until now when a client mentioned to me that she self sabotages and it got me thinking about my own achievements or lack there of. So I’ve been researching this topic and have realized that this is what I do with no thought or reason behind it,  it just happens. Some where in the back of mind I have come to believe these things are true about myself. And this morning I was talking to myself in the car as I often do and I said to myself “it’s OK” I’m allowed to be happy, I’m allowed to lose weight, its safe for me to be my ideal weight, I can do it, I’m allowed to earn the income I want and not be made to feel guilty about it, It’s ok to make money and be successful. Its OK for me to have all the things I desire and not feel like I don’t deserve it. It’s ok not to be perfect because no body is perfect. There’s no such thing as perfection so why try an achieve something that isn’t there? The more I tell myself IT’S OK the more my subconscious will listen and I WILL achieve whatever I want! Tell yourself today “It’s Ok”.

Final Thoughts….If your one who is always striving for perfection, stop now and strive for 1% better today then yesterday.  Even posting this blog and adding my video I am saying to myself “It’s ok” just put it out there as long as I am happy with it it doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks. I hope my tips help you let go of perfection too!
